ILLICIT Sea Escapes
Ik woon op een fantastische plek. In de stad (Den Haag), maar tegelijkertijd aan de rand van duinen en zee. Deze uitersten heb ik nodig, contrast loopt als een rode draad door mijn leven. De schoonheid van mijn omgeving verwondert mij keer op keer: de kleuren, vormen en lijnen van het duinlandschap, het mooie licht en de zee die geen moment hetzelfde is.
Bij landschappen ervaar ik de essentie, het gaat mij altijd om het gevoel dat het oproept. Een landschap kan mij enorm ontroeren.
Deze fotoserie maakte ik in de zomer van 2020 tijdens de pandemie. Ik miste mijn vrijheid en vooral de dingen die mij normaal gesproken zo’n energie geven, zoals musiceren in een symfonieorkest. Dagelijks liep ik met mijn camera door de duinen en langs zee. Ik wilde onderzoeken hoe ik mijn blik op de wereld in beelden zou kunnen vastleggen. De serie ILLICIT is het resultaat van deze creatieve zoektocht. De schilderachtige, bijna abstracte beelden van de zee laten zien wat voor mij belangrijk is: kleur, helderheid, ritme, harmonie en een bepaald mysterie.

On the surface these images have a type of simplicity that concentrates on surface planes and diffused tonality, but I also find them to be conceptually complex! These photos create a sense of mood, atmosphere, and drama. The designs lead the eye up, down, and throughout the frame in a way that makes the viewer feel as though they may have walked by these scenes and not noticed them. To me, the photos are interesting because they blur the line between art photography and painterly composition. The images look like brush strokes of painterly colors, flowing across a white canvas.
One of the things that is most interesting about your portfolio is the way that design and composition become primary subjects within the frame. For example, all your photos are very visually dynamic and could be seen purely as abstract designs. Also, the subject matter could be described as organic shapes, lines and textures, light and shadow.”
